What if There's Something Better Than Religion?
Jun 18, 2012
As a young man I remember being told things like:
Jesus didn’t come to set up a religion, He came to establish a relationship with us and start a community of friends who would follow Him together.
Religion is man’s attempt to reach and find God; Jesus represents God’s attempt to reach men and women that they would find Him.
Yet, we have a world filled with people attempting to reach God, please God, or serve God through religious behavior, performance, and rule-keeping.
What if we have it all wrong? What if true religion, or authentic spirituality, is based on a completely different and more hopeful set of presuppositions? What if God’s true intent is to lift us up, and not to put us in our place? What if our life’s destiny is actually to become someone great and to shine brightly before a watching world; a life based not on our spiritual performance review, but another perspective we have somehow missed? How would that change how we view ourselves and how we live?
For those of us who are in Christ, Paul’s words in Colossians are such a hopeful thought: “When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” (Colossians 3:4). This is a different way of thinking for some of us—that we will appear with Jesus at the end of time as we know it, standing with Him in honor.
Do you believe this? Is it possible that part of the Good News is that we are destined for glory?
